Uggh, Sinus Cold'd...

You know, I was getting smug over the health I savoured in September and October. I managed to go two months during the usual cold season without a single sniffle. I didn't even suffer a dry throat through it all.

Oh, how naïve I was.

If you don't hear from me after tonight, it is because my sinuses have exploded and I am locked in a decontamination, biohazard type of room. And whimpering. I imagine I'll be rocking in a corner and whimpering somewhere.

I also heard on the radio this morning there's some "Norovirus" sweeping through schools in Etobicoke. I'm sure my weakened immune system will save me from that threat.

More to follow....

Rain on This Parade

While the rest of North America unfurls their rainbow flags and storms the streets with effervescent Pride, Toronto is bracing for an unpredictable weekend.

Saturday heralds the G20 Summit in our midst -- world leaders are mingling, police forces are building, and protesters are rallying (or whining, depends on an onlooker's POV).

And, one of the first casualties this weekend is, of course, Toronto Pride.

Rumours throughout the queer centres of the city signal to alternative Pride events taking place across Toronto, most of them quiet affairs set in private venues far removed from the front lines. As for the main parade and its overdose of glitter, local queers and our gorgeous visitors await the postponed festivities scheduled for July 3rd and 4th.

What a drag.

Granted, it's a difficult position to complain from -- I for one want nothing to do with Toronto this weekend. The G20 Summit and its crush of protesters promises widespread disruption and a distinct decrease in civil liberties in exchange for enhanced safety. I've heard the criticism over this complete erasure of official Pride celebrations for such a tense climate, but, well, I have to side with organizers on this one.

Pride Toronto attracts three million or more revelers to the city -- how wise is it to blend all that with protesters promising violence and police forces armed with sound cannons and riot gear?

Still, it's tough to know Toronto queers are missing out on celebrating 2010 Pride with our sister cities. Though, I imagine plan-oriented kids foresaw the issues at hand and prepared a two-part Pride celebration -- this weekend encouraged travelers to discover their Pride in other Canadian cities or other North American destinations while still leaving ample calendar space for Toronto's later activities. See? It's possible to find the hidden opportunities even within "Fortress Toronto."

In other news, I foresee difficulties on the horizon for July 3rd and 4th -- as of this moment, I am coming down with what promises to be a wicked summer cold. The same woman at work who made me sick for Thanksgiving 2009 and gave me the flu right in time for my Sister's New Year's Ever wedding has now passed on another nasty cold to me right in time for Pride.

Did I mention this would have been the first Pride I celebrated as a completely out individual?

Yep.

Nothing significant or anything, right?

I am more than irked. I could use stronger, more foul language to describe this news, but it is futile. The germs have taken root and are starting their slow infestation. Seems my immune system is taking its signals from the Summit this weekend -- it is mass chaos in a microcosm.

Bah, physical metaphors. Quit being so well-timed.

More updates to follow on both fronts. Here's to Toronto and this body of mine making it out alive.

Radio Silence Broken

Rah, apologies. I had posts planned out for the week and it slipped past me. I've come off a rather medical-focused week full of pokings and proddings and other such sundries.

Mmm, fun times.

Low profiles are quite dull to maintain, though. I have fallen behind on all the cool kids out there in the Blogoverse and am catching up on their latest posts before I launch into the next round of entries here at Cute, Queer, Canadian.

In the meantime, I thought I would share some mind-blowing news for all the queer ladies in the GTA. I will state now: I am in love with Felicia Day. She's a multi-faceted, soft-spoken, sharp nerd who just so happens to be hot enough to leave third degree burns on the ol' retinas. Need proof? Well, I am glad to oblige:

You are welcome. Anyhow, it's been a while since I visited her high-traffic, nerd-tastic blog (where she reviews sci fi and fantasy novels in between other fantastic posts, FYI) and I think I just about stopped my heart in the process.

SHE WAS FILMING A NEW PROJECT IN TORONTO LAST MONTH.

Not just that, she was crashing in HAMILTON of all places in her down time. Why am I so tempted to visit all the recommended coffee places she mentions in her wrap-up blog from her trek to The Great White North?

HOW WAS I NOT AWARE OF THIS EARLIER? Confound. She was filming a new project for Syfy called Red, a "dark and modern adaptation of [the] Red Riding Hood fairy tale," according to her personal blog. It's not out until 2011, though. Double confound. Though, the stills from the shoot are quite promising:

Come on, I know she's straight and all, but how perfect are we together?

Sure helps with the recovery efforts, let me tell you.

One Week Later...

Ungh... where has all the health gone?

Current status:
  • Crippling sinus headache
  • Massive pressure behind the eyes
  • Fluid in the ears
Serious, what the heck is happening to this ol' body of mine? Could it be the countless hours spent at a computer screen? Hmm, doubtful -- I was doing more time at the computer during the summer and did not have issues.

Do I have eye infections? Hmm, also doubtful -- there's no pinkness there. Definite swollen sensation, but it could be more a result of the sinus pressure.

I'm calculating the chances I have to visit the clinic and snag some antibiotics. My current doctor tends to give ineffective solutions.

Actual conversation:

Doctor: Well, why not take a hot shower and use the steam to clear your sinuses?
Miz Moffatt: Umm... well, I'm living off Advil at this point. I don't think the shower is helping at all --
Doctor: Right, so try a hot shower.
Miz Moffatt: But, I DO take hot showers--
Doctor: And the steam will help it.

I wish my last doctor didn't retire. He tended to help find solutions.

So, random doctor at the clinic it is. And perhaps a visit to the eye doctor is called for.

And certainly more posts to come this week.

Ungh...

Apologies go out to all the readers across the Blogoverse. I am nursing a wicked sinus cold at the moment, one that is taking its sweet time to infect me.

It's all in the ears at the moment, creeping into my throat as of this morning. Not only was I sick for Christmas, it looks like I will be decrepit right in time for the Sister's wedding.

I do have quite a bit to post about, but I've been struggling to find the energy to do so. Rather than air my complaints, I will give myself the space to get healthy and then I shall bombard this space with an epic amount of posts.

Oh, immune system -- what has become of you?
